Modern ICT technologies offer new opportunities to improve the efficiency of cash services in the retail networks. The company J'son & Partners Consulting presents main results of the research of the Russian market of self-service terminals

Brief summary of the study

Self-service terminals or semi-attended customer-activated terminals (SACATs) are specialized electro-mechanical devices that allow the buyer to pay for goods in retail stores. The demand for accelerating the purchase process from retail buyers is growing steadily, and retail self-service stores can get real benefits in efficiency and increase of customer loyalty, following the desires of their buyers. Self-checkout can significantly reduce the waiting time in the queue, improving the user experience and allowing the store management to redirect their employees form cash service to other functions.

The global market

According to RBR, the number of self-service terminals in the world in 2015 increased 2.4 times in comparison with 2008, and by 2020 the number of installed terminals will reach 335 thousand. The greatest number of implementations of SACATs is expected in Western Europe and Turkey. The main point of growth is the desire of large retail chains to minimize costs amid slowing the revenue growth from retail sales.

Among the global trends from a technological point of view, the experts notice an increase in the number of devices with NFC that allow to make payments for goods and services in a contactless way, with help of, amongst others, various mobile devices.

In 2010, there was firstly introduced a mobile app that allows you to use mobile phones as portable scanners, this technology is becoming more and more popular in the world.

The Russian market

Despite the fact that the first implementation of self-service terminals in Russia occurred in 2009, currently the Russian market can be characterized as “nascent”. In the coming years, the main points of support for the growth of the market will be the largest retail networks (such as Auchan Groupe, Magnit, X5 Retail Group), which have successfully conducted pilot tests of such systems and which are currently completing providing their old stores with self-service terminals, simultaneously equipping all the newly opened stores with such terminals.

The terminals can be most frequently found in major retail stores both in Russia and abroad. Despite the current low level of penetration in Russia there is a sufficient basis for the implementation of such technology – thus, at the beginning of 2015, according to J'son & Partners Consulting, there were more than 15 thousand hypermarkets and supermarkets in Russia. There are large retail stores in Russia, fully equipped with self-service checkout instead of "traditional" cash registers.

Furthermore, so-called "neighborhood" stores may become an additional springboard for the growth of self-checkout in Russia. As a rule, the position of one "classic" cash register can be taken by 2 or 3 self-service terminals, which significantly increases their patency in rush hours. Currently, several major networks, owing such stores, are gradually implementing them with self-service terminals.
