The Pay TV market in Russia. Results of 2016

In 2016, the subscriber base of Pay TV in Russia increased to 40.88 million subscribers.

The main contribution was made by satellite TV (+3,4% of new subscribers) and IPTV (+11,2%). In the baseline forecast till 2020 these segments will continue to grow: satellite dishes - due to the lack of alternatives outside the cities, and IPTV - due to the increasing penetration of broadband access to the Internet. The share of cable TV will be reduced, meanwhile subscribers within the segment will switch from analog TV signals to digital.

In the fight for subscribers in 2016, large operators continued using aggressive marketing campaign, packaging of a large number of services in one offer and discounts on promotion campaigns. The biggest number of new subscribers were attracted by Tricolor TV and Rostelecom. As a result, they account for more than half of all subscribers of paid TV in Russia (Fig. 2).

The total revenue of the operators from the provision of Pay TV services has increased in 2016 by 9.7% and amounted to 76.7 billion.

Forecasts of the Pay TV industry development

The Pay TV market in Russia in the coming years will continue to grow in subscribers and revenue. Experts of J'son and Partners predict the average annual growth of revenue on the market for the period up to 2020 at 5-7%.

Increasing income of operators is possible due to:

  • The development of additional services, such as VOD, Timeshift, Multiroom.
  • The change of the channel package policy. Allocation of targeted thematic channels (including their HD and UHD versions) and selling them in separate packages.

In the framework of the scenario of faster growth in the penetration of new technologies, J'son & Partners predicts that in 2019 the total number of Pay TV subscribers and subscribers of OTT-services may exceed the number of households in Russia.
