J'son & Partners Consulting presents results of the study devoted to the Russian Pay TV market in 2017 and forecasts of its development until 2022.

Basic results presented in the study:

- Basic and additional services provided by Pay TV operators and their contribution to the total revenue.

- Subscriber base of HD-channels and potential of 4K broadcasting in Russia.

- Subscribers by types of TV channel packages (basic package, extended package, additional thematic packages, a-la cart channels).

- Prospects of the market development by technologies of signal delivery until 2022 in two scenarios for the period up to 2022:

o   Basic

o   Advanced growth of penetration of new technologies

- Evaluation of Pay TV penetration rate by regions of Russia as a whole and by signal delivery technologies.

- Detailed description of the TV content market (manufacturers, aggregators, distributors) with the latest changes.

In 2017 the subscriber base of Pay TV in Russia amounted to 41.9 million subscribers, which is 2.5% more than in 2016.

In comparison with the previous year, the shares of Rostelecom, Tricolor, MTS and ЕR-Telecom increased in the total subscriber base. Moreover, the first three operators did it because of attracting new subscribers, and ЕR-Telecom increased the number of subscribers primarily due to the active policy in the market of mergers and acquisitions.

J'son & Partners Consulting identifies providing the subscriber with the possibility of linear viewing of TV channel packages using cable, IPTV or satellite broadcasting technologies as the basic service of Pay TV.

The following services are considered by the company experts as additional Pay TV services:

- Video on demand / pay-per-view (VOD/PPV) - non-linear videos (movies or TV programs) from the library or on selected channels.

- Multiscreen - possibility to watch TV and video content on different devices (Smart TV, PC, TV, mobile device) within the same contract. It is usually possible to use up to five devices simultaneously.

- Multiroom - possibility to watch TV channels on different set-top boxes (TVs) within one contract.

- Timeshift - delayed viewing function.

Pic. 3 presents the estimated volume of Pay TV revenue in Russia in 2017, as well as the forecast of revenue growth in the industry until 2020 with breakdown of the total figure for basic and additional services.
