J'son & Partners Consulting presents brief results of a study of the vending machines market by the end of 2015 and forecast of its development until 2020.

Vending machines are currently passing through digital transformation associated with the global trend of connecting devices to the Internet. The emergence of the "Internet of things" (IoT) in the market of vending machines allows traditional machines to go beyond the simple issuing of goods, offering customers a more interactive and interesting user experience, it also allows operators and brand owners to use data analytics and cloud services to increase efficiency and reduce their operating costs. The current increase in the level of urbanization and in human traffic in public places lead to the strengthening of the economic justification for the application of smart vending machines that have a connection with the outside world.

Brief summary of the study

The aim of this study is to assess the volume of demand for vending machines in Russia in natural and in monetary terms, its prospects till 2020, and defining the operators’ preferences to use new types of vending machines. Special attention was paid to smart vending machines – those that allow to: carry out remote technical diagnostics, assess inventories, make cashless payments, generate sales and fiscal reporting, etc.

It should be noted that Russian markets of coffee machines and dispensing machines are more developed, while the segment representing machines with products in solid packs has a space for growth. Based on this, the research was mainly focused on technically sophisticated machines that offer products in a solid box, not like coffee, draught drinks or dry goods.

Special attention in the study was also paid to the probability of using vending machines, including special types of vending machines, in large chain retailers in Russia.

The main drivers of the vending market development in Russia in the coming years will be:

➢     switching to a Western format of small-scale retail trade (changes in the product mix and appearance of retail outlets, small retailers’ exit from the shadow vending sector);

➢     developing of technologies for automated trade, making this method more attractive and simple for the users;

➢     low saturation of the vending market as a whole.

The main obstacle for the of the Russian vending market development are some legislative barriers at both the Federal and municipal levels. As example, there are amendments to the Federal law "About application of cash registers at implementing cash calculations and (or) calculations with use of payment cards", which in their current form require to provide vending machines with check-out equipment from 1 July 2018.

In 2015 the Russian market of vending machines in monetary terms fell by 23.5% in comparison with 2014. In 2016, given the difficult economic situation in Russia it is expected that the market will continue to decline. The largest contribution to this fall will be brought by a decrease in demand for sophisticated vending machines. However, in 2018 the market size will exceed the pre-crisis levels, and in 2020 the market volume in monetary terms will amount to 27.6 billion rubles.

Comments from the market participants:

1. What are the new trends in the Russian vending market in whole and in particular you can name?

The main trend is expanding the range of goods and services. For example, our company develops a new line of the vending business in Russia, – selling toys through vending machines. In 2013, we   launched a franchise project to sale this franchise business.

Vending is an interesting field for small business: fast startup, low financial input, simple maintenance (of the vending machines). But entrepreneurs are interested to obtain a ready-made business with an established model, not just commercial equipment.

Our concept is to sell ready-made solutions for businesses, namely selling equipment and sets of goods. During this period of selling the franchise, there have been already established more than 1,000 vending machines throughout Russia and now they are successfully operating. For 2016 we plan to expand twice our total vending machines network called "Mangosteen" which is focused on selling toys.

2.What are the positions of the domestic producers on the Russian market?

Production of vending machines in Russia is becoming more competitive due to the changed rate of ruble. Producing machines and accessories in Russia has become profitable and more reliable. Russian machines attract the buyers with not only their competitive prices, they are also better in terms of warranty service. Russia in the near future can fill the market with domestic vending machines taking the leading position in it, but also export them both to the closest neighbors and far abroad. Our company plans to continue expanding our production of vending machines in Russia and to develop production of domestic electronic component.
