J'son & Partners Consulting evaluates subscriber base of IPTV in Russia as around 2,54 mln.subscribers, at the end of 2012. As a result, the penetration of IPTV rate at the end of the period was around 4,7% of the total number of households in Russia.

 

 

Service penetration in the Federal Districts

The Far East Federal District is the leader among the 8 Federal Districts, where the penetration rate of the service achieved 10% in 2012, and the total number of household connections was 237 thousands.

 

 

Key market players

The key market players at the end of 2012 are Rostelecom, Vimpelcom and MTS with 55%, 35% and 6% shares accordingly.

 

 

Demand on IPTV services analysis

 

The awareness rate of the potential IPTV service users is 74%, among the interviewed respondents that do not use the service at the moment, but most of them (69%) – are potentially interested in this technology and 5% are not interested.

 

It is worth to mention, the rate of interest in IPTV service is much higher rather than the awareness rate (95% vs 74%). The most interest share belong to the “Recording of the aired TV programs” and “Screen menu”.

 

 

 

Current state and the development dynamics of the adjacent markets in Russia

 

Pay TV

According to J'son & Partners Consulting, around 31,9 mln.subscribers have used Pay TV services at the end of 2012, that is 7% higher rate rather than in the 1st H, 2012 and 11% in 2011. The total share of the large holdings and the regional companies are more than 78% of the total Pay TV market in Russia, that for 3 p.p. less than in 2011.

 

Broadband access

Broadband access in Internet market in the physical terms at the end of 2012 was 26,4 mln,households (the penetration rate was 48%). The annual growth rate of the market was 18%.

 

Drivers and barriers of Russian IPTV services market development

 

 

One of the main IPTV advantage is the availability to combine the interactive and non-interactive content, and the opportunity for the high quality air of content in regions where the Internet speed is limited.

 

Nevertheless, despite the equal amount of drivers and barriers, IPTV market in Russia is overstepped for the last 3 years all other TV technologies by the growth rate.

 

Forecasts for the development of the Russian market of IPTV services by 2017

According to J’son & Partners Consulting the subscriber base of IPTV will be not less than 3,4 mln. at the end of 2013.

 

In comparison with 2012, the penetration rate of IPTV in 2017 can be twice more, it means almost 10% of the Russian population will use this technology.
