Auto payment – service, provided within the distance financial services (such as internet-banking, mobile-banking and SMS-banking) that provide opportunities to make payments on pre-defined details with pre-specified intervals or at predetermined conditions automatically.

 

Foreign market of banking auto payments

Due to the peculiarities of the foreign banking systems, the foreign form of auto payments is not popular in Russia. Auto payment service substitute on the foreign market of banking services is “direct debit service”.

 

Direct debit service – this is a form of payment, when merchant deduct the funds from banking clients accounts, in case the client (payer) provided to the bank payment instruction with all information of payee and time frames to execute the payment. Direct debit usually uses for the regular payments such as replenishment of credit cards or payments of utility bills, and the sum of payment varies.

 

Direct debit service is available in many countries including:

 

       UK
       Brazil
       USA
       Germany
       Spain
       South Africa
       Switzerland
       Netherlands
       others

 

Direct debit is usually made according to the intro countries rules and framed by the internal payments. The exception – Single Euro Payments Area, within which there is availability to provide transboundary and internal debiting since November 2010 in EURO. In USA, direct debit processed by automated networks of clearing centers.

 

Russian market of distance banking services

In the present, the periodic banking auto payments are part of distance banking services for individuals. They provide the availability to authorize regular payments by any wires (some banks provide this services only for the limited list of services providers). In order to use auto payment service several terms must be fulfilled:

 

       user must be bank client
       in terms of banking services one or several distance services must be activated
       activated distance service must support “Auto payment”

 

There are several types of services on the distance banking services market:

 

       internet-banking

 

Internet-banking — type of distance banking services, when the access to the accounts and operations is provided at any time and from any computer with Internet. For this purpose web-browser is used, no need to install any part of software supporting system.

 

       mobile - banking

 

Mobile banking (m-banking) – services, providing the access to control banking account and to manage it via the mobile terminal with the wireless connections.

 

       SMS-banking

 

SMS-banking – range of services, providing the access to control account and/or manage the accounts, sometimes to pay for different services.

 

According to J’son & Partners Consulting, turnover of payments via internet-banking was 591 bln.RUB in 2012 (+39% in comparison with 2011), turnover of mobile payments was 8,1 bln.RUB (+39% in comparison with 2011), SMS-banking turnover was 6,8 bln.RUB. It is expecting that the turnover of internet banking, mobile banking and sms-banking will reach 1,8 tn.RUB, 29 bln.RUB, 31,8 bln.RUB accordingly to 2017.

 

 

Mostly the clients used internet-banking – 9,9 mln.users, SMS-banking and mobile banking – 2,4 mln and 0,7 mln. users of all distance banking services in 2012.

 

 

In the payment structure of the executed payments via different distance banking services in 2012, the biggest share (83,7%) was occupied by money transfers (including transfers on free banking wires, payments between user’s accounts, replenishment of e-wallets etc.). The second in the raw was housing and public utilities.

 

 

Russian market of banking auto payments

Auto payments are becoming very popular in Russia. According to J’son & Partners Consulting, auto payments were 3,7% of turnover of payments via internet-banking, mobile-banking and SMS-banking in Russia, 2012, and it was only 3% in 2011. It is expected to reach more than 10% of turnover via mobile-, internet-, SMS-banking at the end of 2017.

 

 

Among the leading key market players of auto payments main activity is showed by Sberbank (increased the share of turnover for 11% from 2008 till 2012) and its market share of 46% in 2012. At the end of 2012 the turnover share of Alfa-bank and VTB24 decreased and was 13% and 7% accordingly.

 

 

According to J'son & Partners Consulting, money transfers in 2012 (including transfers to accepting banking wires, auto credit repayments, between users accounts, replenishment of e-wallets) and payments for mobile cellular were 59% and 18% accordingly, payments for mobile network decreased for 4%. At the end of 2017 the payments share for cellular will decrease 14%, utility bills payment will increase till 10%.

 

 

According to J’son & Partners Consulting, the number of users of internet/mobile/SMS-banking with activated periodic auto payment in Russia in 2012 was 2,6 mln.users or 23% of the total users of distance banking services.

 

 

The leaders by number of users who activated auto payments are:

 

       Sberbank
       Alfa-bank
       VTB24

 

Almost half of the users are Sberbank clients.

 

Key tendencies of the Russian banking auto payments market

 

       Increased the amount of financial distance services users
       Increased the rate of penetration of auto payments among the distance banking services users
       Increased the number of banks that provide auto payment service
