According to J’son & Partners Consulting estimations, Russian smartphone market was presented by 5,3 mln. devices in 1Q2014 that is 65% increase vs 1Q2013.  

 

Smartphones are continuing actively replace feature phones. On the Russian mobile terminals market share of smartphones has reached 57% in 1Q2014. For comparison the same index in the world is still a little bit higher – 63%, in the meantime this gap for Russia is decreasing. 

 

 

By our opinion, high price of devices in Russia is the main restraining growth factor for the Russian smartphone market. The influence of this factor is decreasing since the beginning of 2014.

 

According to J’son & Partners Consulting estimations the average price of smartphone has decreased till 258 USD by the end of 2014.

 

 

Structure of smartphone market by operational systems

Android is continuing to gain its share on Russian smartphones market. In accordance with J’son & Partners Consulting data, around 84% of all smartphones sold in Russia in 1Q2014 are managed by this operational system.

 

Smartphones with Bada and Symbian operational systems almost disappeared in the beginning of 2014. As a result, Russian market is currently divided between Android, iOS and Windows Phone.

 

 

Key market trends

According to J’son & Partners Consulting key market tendencies on the Russian Smartphone market in 2012 – 2014 are the following:

 

  • Increasing sales share of Chinese manufacturers that specialized on budgeted smartphones;

 

  • Growth of low price level smatphones sales: share of “less than 100 USD” segment in 1Q2014 was 22%, while in 1Q2013 this index was only 2,4%;

 

  • Increasing growth of branded (operators) smartphones sales: share of smartphones in the total sales of branded mobile terminals was around 90% in 1Q2014 and price of such branded device is rather low in comparison with market price in general;

 

 

  • Appearance and active growth of smartphones sales that support LTE as well as decrease in average price of LTE Smartphone: in Russia share of LTE smartphones in the total sales of smartphones was around 15% in 1Q2014,;

 

 

  • Exploded growth of popularity of smartphones that support two or more SIM-cards.
