The company J’son & Partners Consulting provides brief results of the study of the Russian market of mobile operator payments, mobile and SMS-banking. Within the study J'son & Partners Consulting used its own materials (including the results of field studies), forecasts of other major consulting and analytical agencies, data of authoritative industry experts and market players.

Shopping with mobile terminals is gaining popularity in Russia. According to the survey of J'son & Partners Consulting, conducted in October 2012, about 44% of smartphone users and 60% of tablet users paid for goods or services in the previous month of a survey using these devices.

(¹ refers to the purchase of physical, non-physical products, as well as mobile content and applications)

An important factor contributing to the increase in the volume of purchases through mobile terminals, is the ability to pay for goods and services directly from a mobile device, in particular, with the help of mobile payments. Via mobile payments owners of cell phones and tablets can pay for goods and services money from the mobile accounts and bank accounts.

Mobile payments are payments made via mobile handset within services such as mobile banking, SMS-banking and mobile operator charges. Mobile operator payment service is an electronic payment service of mobile operators, allowing to pay for goods and services via mobile phone and / or web portal with on the personal account and / or a credit card.

Mobile banking is a service that helps to manage funds using a mobile terminal, including payments for goods and services, and make transfers from your bank account. The service is implemented either by using SMS-commands (SMS-банкинг), or by using special application for mobile phones that use the Internet to transmit data.

Turnover of services like mobile payments as well as the turnover of services such as banking terminals, non-banking terminals, electronic cash refers to the turnover of the market of electronic payment systems (EPS).

According to J'son & Partners Consulting estimations, turnover of EPS in Russia in 2012 will amount to 1,811 billion rubles, an increase of 24% compared to the same period of 2011. Turnover of mobile payments, which is a part of EPS in 2012 will exceed 24 billion rubles and will be only 1.3% of the estimated turnover of the CSE.

Mobile operator payments

Russia is one of the few countries where there is a market of mobile operator payments. The U.S. and European operators do not provide such services. One reason is the payment method - post-pay, which is dominant in these markets. In Russia, the market has reached a new level with the development of technology in smartphones and the emergence of mobile applications for shopping. This market compete with other payment methods such as mobile banking and terminals, which could affect the payments for public utilities the development of this service.

In 2011, the amount of carrier payments was $ 6.6 billion, while it exceeded the amount of payments through mobile banking in all segments except the money transfer, payment of fines and electronic commerce. The mobile services took the largest share of 27% of the turnover of operator payments in 2011. In 2012 the turnover of the mobile operator payments increased by 44% to 9.5 billion rubles.

A new stage in the development of the market came with the advent and proliferation of smartphones that support functional and comfortable application. According to J'son & Partners Consulting estimations, by the end of 2017 the market of mobile operator payments in Russia will exceed 40 billion rubles.

Mobile banking

Market of mobile banking is a growing and promising service in the world, enabling to take customer service to a new level. According to comScore, in the United States during the year the number of users using mobile financial services has increased by 30%. The most promising direction at the moment is the applications of mobile phones. The growth of the use of applications for mobile financial services in the United States was 90% during the year, and this trend will continue. In Europe, the bankers are also optimistic about the prospects of mobile banking, and banks invest in the development of mobile trends and development of modern functional applications.

Russia will follow the global trends in the development of mobile banking, however, mobile operator charges develop more dynamic in the Russian market and the trend will continue. The amount of payments made through mobile banking in 2011 amounted to 5.8 billion, the largest share of turnover of payments through mobile banking was taken by money transfers (30%). In 2012, the turnover of payments through mobile banking increased by 39% and amounted to 8.1 billion rubles.

According to J'son & Partners Consulting forecasts, by the end of 2017 the turnover of payments via mobile banking will be 29 billion, and the share of remittances in the turnover of payments will increase to 35%.

Among Russian HandyBank "Gazprombank"bank applications are most functional in mobile banking and payment system. Among the considered applications only these applications allow a bank transfer by free details. By the number of supported platforms, the leader is "Alfa-Bank", the applications that are available for all popular platforms, including the gaining popularity platform Windows Phone.

SMS-banking

SMS-banking is a group of services that provide the opportunity to monitor the status and / or account management, and sometimes allows you to pay for a variety of services.

Many banks provide only informational SMS-banking within the SMS-banking, which provides information on the accounts, their modification or condition.

SMS-banking is carried out by means of messages "on demand» (Pull) and messages “Event” (Push).

According to J'son & Partners Consulting, in 2012 in Russia, 43.4 million people used SMS-banking, the vast majority of them were clients of informational SMS-banking. Products and services were paid by slightly more than 5% of users, 94 %of which pay for mobile services. In 2011, Russia had 1.68 million users paying for services with SMS-banking, 95% of them paid for mobile communication. Payment for other services using SMS-banking, in addition to mobile services, is not popular among Russian users. Thus, broadband access services and housing services by SMS-banking paid only by 2.5% and 2.7% of users, respectively. By 2017, the number of users of SMS-banking will increase to 84.5 million, and the percentage of people who pay for goods and services will increase by 1.5 times.

In 2012, SMS-banking market has increased by 34% as compared to 2011 and amounted to slightly less than 21 billion rubles. Currently, the market of information SMS-banking has more than doubled the turnover of payments through SMS-banking, the growth rate of payments through SMS-banking is much higher than the rate of growth of the market of informational banking, by the end of 2016 the size of these markets will be equal.

However, in Russia, according to J'son & Partners Consulting, increasing popularity of SMS-banking is expected. The main factors which have a positive effect on the penetration of SMS-banking in both quantitative and qualitative indicators are:

      • Low rate of smartphones penetration (by the end of 2012 in Russia will be about 27 million smartphones, of which only 14.5 million have the ability to install applications of mobile banking)
      • greater public confidence in banks than various electronic payment systems
      • development of the largest Russian banks of remote services, including SMS-banking.

NFC - monetization opportunity for mobile operators

In the coming years the development of NFC-technology and mobile commerce will reduce the use of cash. The main efforts of the major market participants of contactless payments will be focused on the infrastructure creation for NFC-payments. In general, there is a trend of convergence of telecommunication products and banking industry that allows mobile operators to create convenient channels for subscribers access to financial services in mobile phone stores, and from the phone. But at the moment the majority of NFC services cannot be attributed to the operator mobile payments, as the technology involves handling accounts, regardless of the operator. Despite this, the operators are trying to monetize the use of this technology by creating their services and sim-cards with NFC module.

According to J'son & Partners Consulting forecasts, from 2012 to 2017. CSE market will grow and increase its share relative to other payment methods. In this case, one of the fastest growing payment methods in the structure of EPS are payments through mobile terminals (mobile operator payments, mobile banking and SMS-banking). In the segment of mobile banking Russia will follow the global tendencies of the services. In the next few years, banks that have implemented applications for mobile phones, will increase the functionality and interface, and the banks that have only mobile banking using sms-commands or the mobile version of Internet banking, will introduce new solutions according to market trends. The most promising area of mobile banking is an application for mobile devices.
