Description of the competitive environment

 

Ultra HD TV began to develop in Russia in 2013, when the first TV that supports UHD format appeared. According to J'son & Partners Consulting, the Russian market is now represented by 377 TV models that support 4K format. The largest share is occupied by two South Korean manufacturers — LG and Samsung, which occupy 33% and 29% of the market, respectively. Next, by a wide margin are Sony (12%) and Philips (10%), and Panasonic with 6% of the total number of models. Thus, these five companies accounted for 90% of the whole range of UHD TV represented in Russia.

 

 

In addition to TVs supporting 4K, there are media players and set-top boxes for viewing UHD content. This market is dominated by foreign models.

 

To increase the demand for new devices largest electronics manufacturers collaborate with online cinemas, which in 2014 began to buy movies in 4K quality and show them to their subscribers on Smart TV. In 2014, ivi, Okko and Ayyo expanded their libraries with UHD content. In the middle of 2015 the online video service Megogo joined them.

 

 

In 2015, "Tricolor TV" became the first Russian operator which started commercial broadcasting in 4K quality: INSIGHT UHD and TRICOLOR ULTRA HD. They are available for viewing with a subscription to primary channel package "United", the subscriber in this case needs only receiving equipment to receive 4K Ultra HD and a TV that supports this format. General Satellite was the developer of the first Russian set-top box for “Tricolor TV" as the partner company.

 

Manufacturers of subscriber devices, servers and network equipment are extremely interested in active development of commercial broadcasting of 4K content by TV operators. This can give a boost to sales growth and accelerate the transition of television to a new technological level.
