Along with objective market indicators for each content type the study considered market structure, delivery channels and patterns of consumption. The geography of the study covers global figures and markets of the leading countries and Russia.

Digital content ecosystem

To date, digital content is the most important driver of modern high-tech markets.

In this study, the term "digital content" will be used as an umbrella term to describe three segments of multimedia products market:

  • content production in digital format;
  • multi-media products distribution in digital environment;
  • consumption by users of the content produced and transmitted in digital format.

For distribution companies, Internet sites, content stores, as well as for ordinary consumers of digital content it is an informational, entertainment or gaming product distributed over digital networks or in digital format on a physical medium, and consumed, written and copied without quality degradation .

The concept of "digital content" also has other meanings:

Manufacturers of multimedia content associate this term with any multimedia product created using digital technology or in digital format.

For operators digital content is a special kind of data transmitted, characterized by the specific requirements for quality of transmission (eg, broadcast or multicast).
A basic ecosystem of both analogue and digital content is given below. Blocks of gray background are not considered in the report.

Digital content markets in Russia and the world

For the last few years digital content market has been showing a steady growth preserving general structure of revenue distribution by the type of content. A complete leadership in the market of digital video content belongs to the segment, which includes online video, digital TV services and VOD. Its share of total revenue in 2011 was 72%. The segments of mobile content and online games take next places and make up 14% and 10% of the market correspondingly. To date, revenue from audio (3%) and e-books (1%) takes an insignificant market share.

The world leader in terms of digital content market by the end of 2011 is the United States, followed by the European, Asian countries and Russia with a significant lag. Market in South-East Asia is characterized by high growth rates due to the level of penetration of broadband and mobile internet. As a consequence of the dynamic development of the market, the task the government faces is to create and maintain the necessary infrastructure, which includes the development of legal services that improve the quality of content consumption, changes in legislation, etc.

The countries of Western Europe are characterized by the moderate, but at the same time sustainable growth rates. Digital content market size in the UK in 2011 grew by 15%, each year in such segment as audio and video, there is a decline in sales of the content in a physical format, which leads to structural changes increasing the share of digital sales.

Russia has a significant market share of mobile content. First of all, this is explained by the nature of traditional digital distribution of content for mobile devices and relatively short history of monetization of other content types.

Content delivery and consumption

Expansion of network bandwidth and data speed rate on the internet, as well as the growing popularity of "heavy" media content significantly affect the structure of the global and Russian traffic.

Streaming online video and IPTV (including services of Pay TV, VOD, viewed on a PC or TV with STB (set top box) will constitute the largest share (almost 60% of Internet traffic) in 2015. Online games, despite almost annual doubling of traffic in relative terms will make significantly less than 1%. Average increase of Internet traffic in the segment of VoIP will be 4%, which is significantly less than average growth by segment.

Changes in the traffic structure to the "heavy" content make players consider the peculiarities of its individual types transmission, namely, the need to ensure continuity of the signal in real time, ie, constant network latency. It promotes the development of CDN services (content delivery network), well-known in the world, but not popular in Russia.

Digital content access devices

Essential condition for the growth of digital content market is the development of the necessary infrastructure. One of such factors is the evolution of terminals for content consumption. The number of devices is increasing along with the emergence of new technological solutions, while the cost for the consumer is reducing. The explosive growth of demand for smartphones and tablets enables "mobilization" of the market. Currently, the mobile terminal is not considered as a unique channel for content consumption, because the main way to get the media is the Internet but not technological cellular communication channels. In fact, the audience of mobile content is included into a large audience of consumers of digital content on the Internet.

In turn, distributors of digital content create multi-platform solutions, resources and services that enable access to content from all possible devices (smartphones, SmartTV, media center and PCs). Thus, the culture of legal content consumption is formed for the user. The possibility of actual premium content consumption via any available device creates motivation to use paid services.
