Back to Berlin with a Bang

Broadband World Forum returned to Europe with a bang last month. 4,258 attendees from 93 countries spent three days at the Messe Berlin hearing from the top-tier of global network operators.

A buzzing show floor hosted more than 170 exhibitors at Broadband World Forum’s new location right in the heart of Europe. A range of panels, workshops and technology tours guided attendees through the hottest topics impacting the sector:

Speakers from industry leaders Nokia, Intel, BT, Deutsche Telecom, Telefonica and Google gave their strategic view on the direction of fixed-access services and technical solutions.

Government representatives from across the EU, as well as Don Stockdale, Chief of the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau at the US Federal Communications Commission, gave their view on the regulatory landscape and the legislation needed to facilitate ubiquitous high-speed broadband for all.

Here’s what they said:

Don Stockdale, chief of the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau, US FCC

“We need to remove regulatory barriers to deployment and stay out of the way of technological innovation.”

Federico Guillén, President of Fixed Networks at Nokia

“The strategy of deploying fiber to the most economical point in the network is still valid, but the combination of fixed fiber, wireless and other access technologies is now even more crucial to the operator’s business case.”

Franz Seiser, Vice President, Core Network and Services at Deutsche Telekom

“In our industry legacy hinders us. We need to throw away a lot of legacy. It’s difficult to do but once you’ve done it you wish you had done it sooner.”

Antonio Elizondo, Head of Network Virtualisation Strategy & Technology at Telefonica

“Innovation is vital for telcos for survival. We need a more flexible network underpinned by virtualisation.”

Event-goers were quick to praise this year’s show:

“I loved the event – very informative and with the right people in the same place” – Stefano Nogli, Lead Network Architect, BT

“I really love this show. Quality of the Key Notes is very good and a great mix of C level guys” – Leo Lundy, CTO, Imagine Telecom

“The event was great. I’m looking forward working with the BBWF team in the future.” – Bernd Hesse, Senior Director, Technology Development, Calix
